Most of limestone quarries are explored in the open field. This form of extraction allows greater freedom in the way of managing resources and allows a better knowledge of the existing layers, because the structure of the existing masses can be seen.
On the other hand, part of the semi-products can be easily used to restore filling levels and recover the quarry when time comes.
The Portland Quarry for example is explored in a gallery with several km of tunnels. This method is totally safe and environmentally friendly and allows to preserve the landscape and minimize the local fauna impact. However the extraction costs are higher and not all limestone rocks can be explored in a gallery due to geological stability.
Limestones in general are deposited in layers. Their extraction follows very similar techniques between them using simple and low-polluting equipment. The extraction process involves few combustion equipment. Mainly operate with compressed air and electricity.
The blocks are classified with the serial number. It keeps the block information for later identification, allowing to know the origin of the block, layer, typology, aesthetic characteristics, among others.
The quarries are places of hard work and require a lot of dedication and sacrifice from everyone who works there.
The extraction process has improved a lot in the last two decades. Nowadays it's facilitated by technology and equipment capability, but also by the applied knowledge by geologists and team leaders. It is a process where experience and knowledge have a fundamental role.
