Marble quarries are impressive places for their size, complexity and beauty. The Estremoz and Vila Viçosa Marble offers a wide variety of colors. We can find dozens of different classifications in the same quarry. That's what distinguishes it from other rocks.
Most of the marble quarries are explored in the open sky like the case of Estremoz and Vila Viçosa, and a smaller number in the gallery, like the example of Carrara. The use can be around 3 to 7% in the form of blocks and the rest for the production of various by-products, such as calcium carbonate and gravel, among others.
The preparation of the blocks follows logics that are common among typologies. The direction of the veins and the masses orientation are taken into account in order to obtain the maximum mechanical resistance.
Quarry work is considered demanding and requires a high physical effort. All professionals deserve our recognition because it is thanks to them that we can obtain this wonders of nature.
