Portuguese Pavement consists of floor covering using small stone cubes. It is an ancestral art intrinsically linked to the identity of Portugal, and it has been exported over the centuries to various parts of the world.
Most of the time, white limestone is used, but limestones in different shades can also be applied. The most common colors are white, cream, light grey, dark grey, black, and pink. Through the contrast of colors, this technique allows for the creation of patterns that can reach a certain level of complexity. The main sizes are 4x5 cm, 5x7 cm, and 9x11 cm, but as a hand-split product, the dimensions may vary by approximately 2 cm on each face.
Depending on the project, the cubes can be selected to allow for either a regular and modern cladding or, on the other hand, a more rustic and traditional one. STONE EXPERTISE collaborates with artisans specialized in calçada portuguesa, who perform this art in locations all over the world.
