Black River, this name explains the geological origin of this impressive rock. As we can ascertain this rock had its formation in a riverbed. The erosion of the high Pyrenean mountains was carrying minerals and micro particles of quartz and silica. 240 million years were needed for this rock to come to life. Today it is extracted at about 400 meters altitude, in a surface quarry. We have identified 3 layers with distinct characteristics. Its background color is the same in all layers, grey, almost black, with shiny particles of silica and quartz.
This rock belongs to the family of calcarenites, 40% quartz and 60% limestone. It has a very low porosity and incredible hardness. It can be used on high traffic floors or even on streets and roads.
I had, once again, the opportunity to visit this quarry and to be able to mark blocks for a new exterior façade project for Benelux.
